If the current tenant or tenants will let you back in to get your things, you do not need the landlord's permission.

If there are no tenants there now, or the current tenants won't let you in, you should talk to your local Community Law Centre about your options for getting advice near you. www.communitylaw.org.nz. Your options really depend on your particular situation and whether the person who had the tenancy agreement is cooperating with you.

There are laws about property left behind in rented properties which you may be able to use: www.dbh.govt.nz.
