How can I get my possessions out of my ex flatmate's storage unit when she is refusing to communicate with me?

Question Details: I have asked my ex flatmate to allow me access to her storage unit which is paid for by her business but contains my belongings. It has been three weeks and she is now refusing to communicate with me and claims I owe her money for a power bill, but she has neither shown me the bill nor advised me how much I owe. She said when she is ready she will contact me but I need my stuff back now. What can I do?

By knowingly withholding property of yours, your flatmate may be committing the crime of theft by conversion. We suggest you refer the matter to your local Police station who will hopefully give her a call and common sense will prevail.

However, if the Police cannot assist with what your flatmate is claiming is a civil matter, you or your flatmate could take the issue to the Disputes Tribunal. Click here for more information: www.justice.govt.nz.
