Question Details: I gave my verbal resignation about 3 months ago. My employer was working out a deal for me to stay longer (as they are short staffed). They are taking too long to organise the deal and I am not sure if it will eventuate. Was my verbal resignation enough or will I have to give a formal letter and wait 4 weeks?

Although written resignation is a good idea, it's only required if your contract specifies written notice. Your contract will also set out the notice period you have to give. You can find out more here: www.communitylaw.org.nz and here: www.dol.govt.nz
You say you resigned verbally 3 months ago. It may be worth talking with your employer and checking that they understood that you intended to formally resign. It sounds like you may not have given a finishing date. Sometimes a discussion about leaving a job can be seen more as a signal of an intention to leave, rather than formal resignation. If you leave without fulfilling the notice requirements in your contract, your employer might be able to take you to the Employment Relations Authority.
