What compensation is available to an employee who has filed a personal grievance?

Question Details: A friend of mine laid a personal grievance against their employer for severely punishing them for something they allegedly did. The matter has gone to mediation and the mediator agreed that the company has no grounds on which to base their decision. Can my friend get compensation for all the stress, and have their lawyer's fees paid for by the company? What can be done?

If mediation hasn't resolved the problem, your friend can go to the Employment Relations Authority for a determination.

If the Authority can award a number of remedies. These remedies include compensation for humiliation, loss of dignity, and injury to your friend's feelings.

When lodging a personal grievance claim with the Authority, your friend can make a claim for their employer to cover their legal fees and other costs in preparing for their investigation meeting with the Authority. It will be up to the Authority to decide whether or not the employer should pay your friend's legal fees and costs.
