Question Details: I am getting my first job soon but not sure whether it is going to be part-time or full-time yet. As this is my first time, I'm not sure of what to watch out in this whole employment process. Upon starting this job, what can I do to protect my rights as an employee in a general sense? Is a written employment contract essential? What are my employer's and my obligations/responsibilities?

There are many rights and responsibilities for employers and employees. You can read about them at www.communitylaw.org.nz or at www.dol.govt.nz. The law applies automatically. Your employer cannot say that the law does not apply to them, and you do not have to do anything to make it apply. However, having a written employment agreement is always a good idea to prevent issues.
Your employer must provide you with a written employment agreement, but that is their responsibility not yours, and you still have rights even if there is nothing in writing.
