Question Details: My $46 debt is with the NZTA. I have arranged to pay it in weekly instalments of $10, but the debt collection agency is now reneging on these arrangements and wants the whole sum. Is this reasonable? What can I do?

This will depend on the terms of your agreement with the debt collection agency. For example, if you have missed payments, or breached any other term of your agreement, the debt collection agency may be entitled to claim the full sum despite the agreement.
If the debt collection agency follows up on this, we recommend you visit your local community law centre with a copy of the contract (and any other written evidence of the arrangements) to discuss the matter further.
