Will an overseas shoplifting offence from 30 years ago show up on my criminal record in New Zealand?

Question Details: At the time I paid a $400 fine and that was that. Now, 30 years later, I would like to know if the offence will show up on a criminal history check in New Zealand.

No, overseas convictions will not show on your New Zealand record.

You can check this by getting a copy of your criminal record from the Ministry of Justice. You can get information about doing this and an application form from www.justice.govt.nz.

While your overseas conviction will not appear on your New Zealand criminal record, you may be asked about any overseas convictions in some circumstances (such as when applying for a job). You could check with a lawyer or your Community Law Centre if you are unsure about whether you need to disclose that information.
