Question Details: A friend of mine wants to travel overseas for a contract but he was convicted of serious assault when he was 15 years old. He has since then stayed out of trouble. Can he travel overseas or does this conviction on his record stop him from doing so?

No, your friend can still travel overseas.
Usually the outcomes of Youth Court processes are not 'convictions' but merely 'orders'. These outcomes will go on a person's 'record' but do not count as 'criminal convictions'. For further information, see the Youth Court website (in particular, the bottom part) here: www.justice.govt.nz
Your friend could request a copy of his criminal record to make sure he has no convictions. To do that go to this link: www.justice.govt.nz
